Work-related Road Risk

Road safety data highlights the risks posed by large vehicles on work-related journeys, to vulnerable road users.

In 2024/25, Cycling Scotland plans to lead work with support from Transport Scotland’s Road Safety Framework Fund and in partnership with a range of road safety experts, including TRL, to develop interventions aimed at raising safety standards for the operation of goods and other large vehicles. The aim is to mitigate the risks they pose to people walking and cycling, reduce casualties and provide a safer environment that encourages more people to travel actively.

Work will focus on good practice identified elsewhere, such as TfL’s Work-related Road Risk Policy which uses supply chain procurement and planning processes to incentivise higher operating standards. The project will consider how such measures can be introduced in Scotland and develop a framework for implementation.

Subject to confirmation of funding decisions, work is expected to commence by summer 2024.
