Driver fatigue: Outcomes from the TfL trial of fatigue detection technology and fatigue management systems for bus drivers
This joint TfL/TRL presentation will explore the outcomes from TfL’s fitment of fatigue detection technologies to 450+ buses and the implementation of best practice bus driver fatigue management processes across all eight London bus operators.
The findings from this six month before-after case control trial will provide insights into the effectiveness of fatigue detection technologies and fatigue management processes as a holistic approach for managing, and ultimately eliminating, bus driver fatigue incidents through the largest-scale trial of its kind in the world to date.
The presentation will take the audience through the key learnings, both from the challenges associated with trial design/implementation and the outcomes of the trial evaluation.
Simon Castle, Bus Safety Development Manager, Transport for London (TfL) & Robert Lynam, TRL
Simon Castle’s team has introduced the Prince Michael award-winning Bus Safety Standard which includes features such as camera monitoring systems in place of mirrors and intelligent speed assist as well as improved occupant safety features.
His team continues to research and innovate, continuously developing the safety standard to achieve TfL’s Vision Zero.
Simon brings 30 years of policing experience, mostly in roads policing. He set up and led the Metropolitan Police Cycle Safety team and was responsible for the Exchanging Places programme, which also won a Prince Michael award in 2013.
Robert Lynam is a mixed methods, social and behaviour researcher. He is experienced in designing and supporting the monitoring and evaluation of several transport-related trials spanning different modes.
More broadly, he has worked on numerous transport safety projects involving the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to provide insight and actionable recommendations, including TfL’s Bus Safety Standard development programme.
