The Bikeability Trust Virtual Rider Training Tool: A Gateway to Safer Cycling in Children and Young People?
Recent data show that Bikeability Level 2 cycle training is highly effective. However, its nationwide reach is limited by several factors, such as deprivation and lack of school engagement.
The Virtual Rider Training (VRT) Tool is a Road Safety Trust-funded initiative in which Bikeability Level 2 cycle training graduates can complete five different ‘Challenges’ that collectively develop their understanding of The Highway Code, awareness of good riding practices, hazard awareness and perception, road user empathy and situation awareness.
With their parent/carer, they can log onto the Trust’s Bikeability Club website, where they can win digital badges and add points to their school’s tally on a nationwide leaderboard.
Some riders are being invited to take part in on-road cycling assessments (ORCAs) with their local Bikeability cycling instructors.
This presentation includes data to show how the VRT Tool is not only enhancing young riders’ attitudes towards cycling on roads but also helping to improve their ability to cycle safely on roads, as evidenced in their ORCA performance.
