Safety Lessons from Five Years of E-Scooter Trials

E-scooter trials have been running in the UK since July 2020. In that time, rental e-scooters have proven to be an accessible, sustainable - and, crucially, safe transport option. Voi Technology, which operates e-scooters in 18 towns and cities across the UK, has facilitated over 40 million rides, and will delve into the safety lessons they have learned.

Whilst safety concerns were prevalent before the trials began, rental e-scooters have proven to have strong safety credentials - in no part thanks to significant operator investment and close collaboration with DfT and local authorities. For instance, the introduction of speed limits, designated riding zones, and mandatory safety training have contributed to a 70% reduction in accident rates over the past four years. Furthermore, innovative safety features like in-app reaction tests and enhanced parking protocols have improved user compliance and reduced incidents related to improper parking.

This presentation will explore why e-scooter regulation is needed. Long-promised legislation has not only prevented rental e-scooters from reaching their full potential, but has also seen the number of privately owned e-scooters - which may be potentially dangerous - proliferate.
