Do your eyes deceive you?
When you drive or ride, you aren't truly aware of what your eyes are doing. They're simply a window to process information; it's your brain that's doing the leg, or rather, headwork.
Eye tracking technology is an exciting proposition in the world of road safety. It's rarely used for this type of environment, and yet the educational benefits are huge. Our films (staged scenarios on public and private roads) show drivers and riders exactly where they're looking from point A to point B, and often that's not in the right place!
As an example, a cyclist was behind an HGV. The rider stayed back, carefully positioning themselves to overtake on the offside. They performed the manoeuvre, turning into a side road. Everything, it seemed, was fine. And yet... when we played back the footage the rider failed to notice the HGV indicator. They didn't notice a car waiting to turn into their path. They assumed the HGV driver could see them.
