The Development of Passive Safety and its Contribution to Vision Zero

Vision Zero is not new. The Nordics adopted the concept over 25 years ago and have invested heavily into making their roads safer. By using passively safe products for all of this time as one measure towards this goal. Countries from around Europe are taking road safety more seriously with many at different stages on this journey.

Passively Safe products have been used in the UK since the 1990s proving to have saved hundreds of lives in the UK and thousands around the world and continue to add a vital contribution towards achieving Vision Zero. Today, in the UK the use of passively safe products is an accepted method within road design.

There are many different choices of product. Understanding the differences can be challenging. All products will be crash tested toEN 12767, but is just requesting ‘passively safe’ enough?

  • What do you want to achieve when using passively safe products and what considerations do you take into account?
  • Do you understand all the guidelines of EN 12899-1?
  • Should we consider more environmentally friendly products, sustainability and whole life costs?

Making an informed choice will help to achieve an even better and safer road network.
