School Forensic Collision Investigation Workshop
This workshop is new and, at the time of writing, has only been delivered to eight primary schools within Powys, with very positive feedback. It is aimed at year 6 pupils and involves a 90-minute classroom based lesson on forensic collision investigation. The session is designed in chronological order, from scene preservation through to witnesses, forensic scene examination, forensic vehicle examination, mathematics and eventually re-opening the road.
The children then have a 90-minute practical session investigating a mock pedestrian collision where they put into practice what they have learnt. They return to class and present their findings in a mock trial, followed by sentencing. It teaches the children real life maths and physics, but from a road safety point of view. A big emphasis is placed on seizing the mobile phone, breathalysing the driver and explaining how if you lie, forensic science can catch you out.
