Call for papers 2026

CALL FOR PAPERS

The organising committee has issued a call for papers for NRSC 2026, which is being held at The Queens Hoel, Leeds on 24-25 November 2026.

Background

NRSC is Road Safety GB’s flagship event. For the past three years around 400 road safety professionals have attended, a mix of local authority road safety managers/officers, police and fire & rescue officers.

The conference comprises a Main programme, Fringe programme & a series of Workshops. NRSC 2025 featured a total of around 90 presentations and workshops.

Where possible we are seeking practical presentations with information and ideas that road safety professionals can take away and apply to their day-to-day casualty reduction work.

How to submit

Here’s what we require at this stage:

  • A title & brief overview/abstract for the proposed presentation, suggest no more than 250 words. If it is an intervention, please explain the position re: evaluation.
  • A brief speaker biog for the presenter (unless you’ve presented at NRSC before, in which case we will hold your biog & photo)
  • Please supply this info to Nick Rawlings by email (nickrawlings@roadsafetygb.org.uk) by 28/2/26.

Themes and topics

We are keen to cover the following topics at NRSC 2026. However, we are also interested to receive papers for other topics not listed below.

Funding for, and delivery of, road safety services
How are road safety teams delivering services in the face of a constantly changing political environment and competing demands on budgets and resources?

Illegal and anti-social use of e-scooters, and (to a lesser extent) e-bikes
While this is already a developing issue, it may escalate significantly in the future.

  • We’d like an update on the current e-scooter trial rental scheme, and the Government’s potential plans to introduce a new vehicle category for e‑scooters.
  • We’d also like to hear from local authorities that have developed an e-scooter policy.
  • For e-scooters used outside the trial areas, what is the community policing approach/objectives?
  • It would be useful to have an overview of how police forces across the country approach this issue.

The Road Safety Strategy
An update as to progress with the strategy, as we move towards the end of 2026.

Powered two-wheeler riders
We’d welcome presentation(s) covering practical solutions – in addition to Bike Safe and Biker Down - to educate riders and contribute toward road danger reduction and Vision Zero targets.

The gig economy
We’d be interested to hear about schemes local authorities are delivering to engage with the gig economy.

  • Is anyone working with gig economy employers/riders to deliver some form of training, or rider’s charter?
  • Are any local authorities providing parking for gig economy riders, to reduce the nuisance on pavements for pedestrians?
  • Are any road safety teams working in partnership with colleagues in local planning or environmental health, to establish when new fast food shops open?

Safe System, Vision Zero
We’d like to hear practical examples, from here in the UK and abroad, from road safety teams /partnerships etc that have embarked on their Vision Zero journey.

International presentations
We’re keen to invite road safety professionals from outside the UK to consider presenting, as well as attending.

Children & road safety education in schools
• How can we get road safety education more valued in schools & colleges?
• We would like presentations on engaging with parents, Early Years Providers and Children's Centres in a bid to reduce child road casualties by 70%, as stated in the Road Safety Strategy.
We also welcome presentations covering School Streets & Walked Routes to School.

School Crossing Patrol Service
• How is the SCP service being managed across the country?  Is it still being provided by local authorities?
Interventions & initiatives to address ‘failed to stop’ and verbal abuse incidents.

Autonomous & connected vehicles
• With Waymo planning to launch driverless taxis in London in September 2026, autonomous vehicles have the potential to change the face of road safety, and be the next frontier of Vision Zero.
• We welcome presentations looking into the future, and any lessons learnt from other places around the world.

Speed
• How do we address the issue of speed: how do we make road users slow down?

Driving Standards
• It could be argued that driving standards are at an all-time low
• Why do some people drive with little or no care, and what can we, as road safety professionals, do to change this mentality?

As stated earlier, this is not an exhaustive list, and we are keen to receive expressions of interest from speakers covering other topics.
