Waymo

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to be the world’s most trusted driver.

Since 2009, Waymo (formerly the Google Self-Driving Car Project) has been focused on improving people’s access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes.

Waymo currently operates a 24/7 commercial ride-hailing service in several major US cities with complex urban environments, without a human safety operator behind the wheel. The company is also testing in Tokyo and recently announced its fleet of fully electric Jaguar I-Paces are coming to the UK. The company's technology is a combination of advanced sensors (lidar, cameras, radar), sophisticated artificial intelligence, and extensive real-world and simulated driving data. This approach is rooted in the belief that an ever-vigilant, non-distracted autonomous system can ultimately eliminate human error, which is the primary cause of traffic collisions.

Waymo has accumulated more than 100 million driverless miles in US cities and provides hundreds of thousands of weekly trips to riders.

Waymo’s driving data, when independently analysed by reinsurer Swiss Re, suggests a significantly lower crash rate compared to human drivers in the same operating areas. The Waymo Driver had a 91% reduction in crashes resulting in a serious injury or worse and an 80% reduction in all injury-causing crashes.

Waymo continues to share extensive datasets to promote transparency and aid the Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries.
