Any ‘Safe System’ depends not just on the safe system but on the behaviour and attitudes of the user. This talk explores how The under 17 Car Club Charitable Trust has developed an education programme integrating technical skill with driving knowledge and risk-aware attitudes to deliver a significant reduction in reportable collisions amongst its participants.

The programme includes experiments in impaired driving conducted in conjunction with the Intelligent Mobility Lab at University College London. The talk explores the work done to date, the findings and results arising from that - and shows how contemporary information technology can be exploited for road safety benefit.

Professor John Beckford, Trustee, The Under 17 Car Club Charitable Trust

Professor John Beckford is a Trustee of The Under 17 Car Club Charitable Trust and has been the lead Director of its ‘Pathfinder Initiative’ since its inception in 2008.

John holds a Doctorate in management science, is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Royal Society for the Arts and a Member of the Institute of Management Services.

He is the author of three books on management, is a member of the Safer Complex Systems advisory group for the Royal Academy of Engineering and is the President of the Cybernetics Society.
