Operating the safe system of the future

This presentation will look at how we manage road safety needs to accommodate future technologies and what this might mean for the future role of highway authorities operating a road network, using National Highways as an example.


Matt Staton, Head of National Road User Safety Delivery, National Highways

Matt Staton is Head of National Road User Safety Delivery at National Highways, overseeing the division’s activities across road user behaviour and compliance and how the national team supports delivery at a local and regional level.

Matt has more than 15 years’ experience working in highway authorities in the UK spanning policy, research and intervention design, delivery and evaluation at both local and national level.

Matt is also a part-time PhD student at Loughborough University where he has spent the past five years researching system-based approaches in road safety and has a specific interest in how research evidence is used in practice by decision-makers.
