Bikes in Schools as part of the My Travel Choices active travel project

The Bikes in Schools project was developed to tackle the decline in children being able to ride a bike and take part in the Bikeability programme.

Each primary school in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has been provided with balance and pedal bikes, together with helmets, equipment and storage, so no child need miss out on the joy of getting to grips with balancing and pedalling in early years, and everyone can develop a lifelong skill that will ultimately give them a choice of choosing active travel.

Imogen Leonard, Senior Road Safety Education Officer, Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead

Imogen has been working in road safety education for over a decade, developing and delivering interventions across all ages. Road safety education is considered key to encouraging active travel and Imogen has passionately led the Bikes in Schools initiative, securing funding and rolling out the project right across the borough in partnership with the schools.

She believes that road safety education has a positive role to play in giving children confidence and choices over how they travel, imparting habits and skills that will last a lifetime.
