Tackling the ‘Two-Zeros’ challenge with near miss data
Vision Zero and Net Zero are the two biggest transportation challenges. If considered separately, these two objectives can risk working against each other - as to achieve Net Zero, one key strategy is to focus on a modal shift to active travel, encompassing modes often referred to as vulnerable road users.
Safety is often cited as one of the main blockers to encouraging individuals to start walking and cycling more often. If roads are made safer for vulnerable road users, a virtuous cycle between Vision Zero and Net Zero can be created.
In order to enact the ‘Two Zeros’ strategy, resources need to be targeted in a proactive way that maximises their safety benefits. Waiting for an incident to happen before intervening at a site is too late - not just for the individuals involved in the incident, but for the psychological safety of road users in general.
This presentation will focus on the deployment of powerful and cost effective near miss data and technology, able to monitor safety trends over long time periods, and as the ultimate tool in achieving the ‘Two Zeros’ Strategy. The presentation will showcase real-life use cases from VivaCity’s local authority customers and how they have been aggregating near miss data to their road safety programme portfolio to evaluate scheme performance and implement results.
