‘Taking the Lead’: a light hearted comic approach to delivering serious messages around Air Quality, Sustainable Transport and Road Safety
Tuesday 4 November • 14.30 - 15.15
Year 6 is a very important year group to be working with; the transition to independent travelling, when they no longer wish to be travelling with an adult but are still vulnerable, means it is crucial they are reminded of road safety before the leap to secondary school and beyond.
Addressing the important issue of air quality and sustainable transport this 30-minute piece is presented by two facilitators; “expert facilitator” and the “distracted facilitator” who plays the “everyman” using music, humour and a sense of fun in order to explore serious topics.
This tried and tested method enables the pupils to be entertained, engaged and allows the messages to be delivered in a non-condescending or patronising manner. The discussion and challenges of the topic happens between the facilitators. The audience (pupils) are encouraged to explore, review, correct and challenge the scenarios created by the “distracted facilitator” and identified by the “expert facilitator”. Ideal for Junior Citizenship Scheme events and schools touring.
Leon Hamilton, Artistic Director, Wizard Theatre
Leon Hamilton started out as an actor with his first professional role at the age of 12 in the film Revolution with Al Pacino: film & tv credits since then include: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Wilde playing ‘Philip’, Notting Hill, Eastenders, Chucklevision, Spooks and The Office. Leon was also a regular character on the Johnny Vaughan Show and Dick N Dom In Da Bungelow.
At the age of 20 he did his first schools’ tour and quickly realised this is where his passion lay. He got to work with a number of fantastic Theatre in Education companies including the brilliant Stopwatch Theatre Company.
He was fortunate enough to write workshops and plays and when one of the charities he worked for closed, he was approached to take one of the sessions he had written out on the road himself and thus Wizard Theatre was born!
Almost 30 years later Wizard continues to deliver unique high-quality shows and workshops across the country to schools, colleges and theatres, winning T.I.E. Company of the Year for the last two years running.
