Survivable Speeds

At the heart of the Safe System is the need to protect road users from crash forces that the human body cannot withstand. Speed is a critical factor for Delta-V which is key in determining injury severity.
The Road Safety Foundation has done some work to synthesise the available research that shows the speeds at which 10% of collisions of different types will be fatal or serious in outcome.

This work has been welcomed by road authorities as the in-depth research is incredibly complicated and not at all accessible for those outside of detailed collision investigation.
