Ready Rider: Preparing Young Riders for Safer Journeys

The Challenge
Young powered two-wheeler riders remain among the most vulnerable groups on our roads. Beginning as early as 16, many lack crucial hazard perception, risk awareness, and a practical understanding of vehicle safety responsibilities. While pre-rider online resources exist, there is a critical deficit in structured, face-to-face programmes that directly engage young riders before they ride independently.

The Intervention: Ready Rider
Developed on behalf of Safer Roads Greater Manchester, Ready Rider is a targeted, preventative intervention designed to influence safe riding behaviours at the exact moment young people commence independent riding. Fully aligned with Safe System and Vision Zero principles, the programme recognises the importance of early intervention to mitigate serious harm.

Methodology & Delivery
Designed in collaboration with industry partners, experienced trainers, road safety specialists and young riders themselves, the programme effectively engages 16–24-year-old students within a college environment. The curriculum bridges the gap between theory and reality by integrating:

  • Immersive Virtual Reality: Real-world hazard prediction scenarios.
  • Practical Application: Hands-on motorcycle safety checks and basic maintenance training.
  • Interactive Learning: Comprehensive protective equipment awareness.

Initial Evaluation & Outlook
Preliminary analysis by research consultant Dr. Julie Gandolfi indicates that Ready Rider produces significant improvements in safe attitudes and beliefs across all participating riders. Following a successful pilot at Bolton College, the programme is being repeated to strengthen the evaluation before planned national rollout in 2027. Comprehensive findings will be presented at the forthcoming conference.

Janis James MBE, in her capacity as Chair of Dynamic Initiatives, will present Ready Rider - an innovative young rider intervention commissioned by Safer Roads Greater Manchester as part of their well-established 2 wheels GM Programme. It was developed in partnership with rider specialists, leading industry partners and, most importantly, young riders themselves.

Combining immersive virtual reality hazard perception, motorcycle and tyre safety, practical rider skills and behavioural science, the programme helps young riders recognise hazards earlier, make safer decisions and build the skills needed for a lifetime of safer riding.

The programme supports Safe System and Vision Zero ambitions by helping novice riders better understand and respond to real-world risks. Early independent evaluation findings suggest the approach has significant potential to improve rider attitudes, behaviours and safety outcomes.
