The first two confirmed speakers for the 2016 National Road Safety Conference will both focus on the key issue of influencing the behaviour of young drivers.

Elizabeth Box, head of research at the RAC Foundation, and Dr Mark Sullman, a senior lecturer in the Driving Research Group at Cranfield University, will both speak at the event later this year.

The 2016 National Conference is being hosted by Road Safety GB South West Region in Bristol on 15-16 November. More than 150 people have already registered to attend the event which is co-sponsored by Colas, Vysionics and Insure The Box.

Topics to be covered on the 2016 agenda will include road user psychology, public health and road safety, and social marketing, social media and engagement.

Elizabeth Box is responsible for commissioning a large programme of research at the RAC Foundation.

She has spoken nationally and internationally about UK transport policy, and presented RAC Foundation views to Government and Parliament on a range subjects including school travel, learning to drive, older people’s mobility, traffic signage, road network performance, road safety compliance and future transport policy.

Elizabeth’s presentation will draw on the latest evidence about self-regulatory approaches to risky teenage behaviours, and outline the role that parents can play in supporting adolescents as they negotiate potential risky activities such as driving.

Dr Mark Sullman has more than 20 years’ research and consultancy experience in the areas of occupational safety and driving behaviour and has provided consultancy for a number of multinational companies.

He suggests that behaviour change techniques (BCTs) – ‘the missing ingredient’ – have been largely ignored in road safety, and will use his presentation to outline the evidence to support the use of various BCTs in other areas of psychology, and identify how this knowledge can be applied to improve road safety interventions aimed at young novice drivers and pre-drivers.
